Happy Halloween everyone!

Do you know those pieces every season that you end up re-wearing again and again because they just work? Well I found mine!

We have arrived safely in Denmark and are settling in to our little vacation house with Steven's family.

Halloween isn't widely celebrated in Germany or Denmark, so I will lamely announce that this knit-on-knit ensemble is as close to a costume as I'll get.

P.S. There is limited time left to enter to win $100 to J.Crew!

Driving to Denmark

The North Sea - Denmark, 2011
Today I'm headed to Denmark with my family. The car is packed up with luggage and snacks and I've come prepared with an iPod, a neck pillow and various books to keep me entertained. This will be my third time in Denmark, and I'm hoping that I will actually get to see Copenhagen this time! I am going to be driving a leg of this journey (which in total usually takes about 7 or 8 hours) which means I'll be behind the wheel of a car for the first time in...a year and a half?

Stay off the roads.

On another unrelated (but equally important) note, it's about time to start thinking about Christmas shopping! Honestly, time flies so quickly I can't believe it. Be sure to check out these shops for beautiful, personalized gift ideas.
The custom portraits at Indie Finley are unique, different and beautiful. I love gifts that actually have some thought put into them and it is always so nice to receive a present that is personal. These portraits would be great to give to a friend, family member or spouse - and they're fun!

I'm in a place in life where nesting is definitely on the mind. If everything goes well with Steven's visa we should be back in the U.S. in a matter of months, looking at houses and making plans to settle down. I would LOVE some nice bedding sets like the ones sold at Swanky Outlet. These would make great gifts for anyone with home decor on the brain.

But if all else fails, there's always jewelry. Are you listening boys? The jewelry that Andrea Bonelli makes is stunning, like I-need-this-in-my-life-now stunning. I love the way she works with metals; it is unique, interesting and breathtaking. This jewelry would make great gifts (for you or your loved ones!) Sometimes we need to treat ourselves, right?

Happy Shopping!

Bungee Jumping

On Saturday, a shivering Steven and I crossed something off of our (very long) bucket lists: Bungee Jumping. It was actually an anniversary present to us both, but when we called in July we were told the next available date was in late October - whoops! The day finally arrived, and I have to admit the conditions were not ideal; a crisp 32 degrees and snowing! We huddled together and braved the cold as we waited our turn, watching those up before us take the same plunge that we would be taking as soon as our name was called. The above photos are of the nice man who went before we did. He'd been bungee jumping many times before and didn't seem scared at all! I wish I could have said the same for me.

I didn't feel legitimate fear until we were up on the platform, 50 meters (164 feet) up in the air. I started shaking, thinking over and over again what the heck did I get myself into?  Essentially, I just clung to Steven and dreamt up a happy place.

And then we fell.

And it was the most exhillirating thing I've ever experienced! I couldn't stop laughing as we dangled there by our ankles waiting to get lowered down to ground level.

Do things that scare you. Live a full, adventurous life. Take the plunge.

And in case you need proof, here's a video! (Warning: I scream, and it's pretty loud.) Edit: If you live in Germany and can't watch it because of the music rights thing, just click "watch on youtube" and your problems should be solved.

Have you ever done anything that scares you? Let us know - I'd love to get a discussion going!

Take the Long Way Home

If you want to take a train between Frankfurt and Cologne, you have two options: The ICE (Inter-city Express) train will get you from point A to point B in about an hour with very few stops. The IC (Inter-city) train will get you there in two and a half hours, stopping in little towns along the way.

When I went to Cologne last month, I took the ICE train there, having been wooed by the comfort and convenience of high-speed travel. I had intended to take the ICE back as well, but missed the train by a couple of minutes due to poor planning and an unexpected line at the ticket machine. Grudgingly, I climbed aboard the IC train some minutes later and phoned Steven to tell him I'd be home a few hours later than expected.

What I didn't know was how lovely and enjoyable my 2.5 hour train ride would turn out to be. Unlike the ICE which cuts straight accross nondescript fields and farmland, the IC train took its passengers on a winding, scenic journey through the Rhein Valley (AKA my favorite place in Germany.) Driving directly next to the Rhein river for the majority of the trip, I counted the castles that watched over the tiny medieval villages we passed and amused my fellow passengers with my compulsive photo-snapping.

I took away a simple lesson from that day: Sometimes the less convenient, slower road is the road worth taking...because really, what's the rush?
