In general I prefer to maintain a diet of healthy foods, but on holidays I've been known to splurge. Valentines day is no exception! Last year I made adorable heart shaped pancakes, but this year I thought I'd try something different. Why not cinnamon rolls? They turned out delicious and oh so adorable. If you're looking for something special to do on Valentines day, this could be just the thing!
Using a hand mixer, cream butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in egg.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and yeast.
Add warm buttermilk and flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing at a low speed until blended.
Knead dough (I did so by hand, but if you'd like to use a stand mixer and a dough hook, go ahead!) adding bits of flour as you go along to keep it from sticking. The dough should be relatively sticky in nature, but not overly so. Knead for about ten minutes. Coat a bowl with a little olive oil and place dough inside, turning the dough to coat all sides with oil. Place dough in an oiled bowl and turn once to coat both sides of dough with oil. Cover and let rise, about an hour and a half.
Once dough has risen, roll it out into a long rectangle. Brush on melted butter, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Continue sprinkling until it is evenly coated.
Once cinnamon is evenly distributed, take one side and begin rolling tightly towards the middle. then take the other side and do the same, until the two "rolls" touch.
Cut the rolls to your desired size. Make them heart shaped by pinching the ends between your finger and thumb. It's that simple!
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about fifteen minutes. If you'd like, spread with a nice cream cheese icing and enjoy while still warm!
These rolls turned out so cute and were incredibly delicious. I can see myself making these for many V-Day's to come!
