In the last chapter of our love story, I told you about how Steven told me he loved me in the most romantic love letter I’ve ever received, and how I didn’t say it back to him. The day after my birthday I went with my best friend and mother to Paris and Greece, leaving Steven behind in Germany for two whole weeks.
At the start of the trip, I really thought Steven and I hadn’t been together long enough to know if I really loved him – or if he really loved me, for that matter. I just had no idea! But suddenly, as I was going places and seeing things I’ve always dreamed of seeing, I realized how I felt when he wasn’t around me…and that’s when I began to realize that I really did love him back.
To celebrate my return to Germany two weeks later, Steven planned a surprise for me. He made me close my eyes as he led me out across the meadow behind his family’s home and into a grove of trees. There waiting for us was a tray with mulled cider and mugs, as well as the biggest pile of leaves I’ve ever seen. He remembered a story I’d told him weeks prior about my childhood memories of raking up piles of leaves and jumping in them…and he recreated that memory for me.
I was so incredibly touched by this sweet gesture. We had a blast! It was there, among the trees and the colors of fall, that I said I Love You for the first time.
I’d say the rest is history, but the story’s not QUITE over yet.
